Today I had the privilege to tour beautiful Rummer houses in the Oak Hills neighborhood. This event was organized by Restore Oregon and featured six homes – currently lived in! – renovated/updated or not; I got to meet the proud owners who could tell all about their home.
For people who do not know about Rummer homes, they are mid-century single level homes developed by Robert Rummer and inspired by Joe Eichler’s homes in California. The story is quite interesting as Mr Rummer was in the insurance business before quitting his job to embark on this new adventure of building homes. Rummer built 29 homes in the Oak Hills in 1967-68; his homes feature a simple vaulted and flat roof with a courtyard (enclosed or open-air) and glass window walls throughout to bring nature in.
The neat surprise came in when, in one of the homes, I got to meet Mr Robert Rummer and his wife Phyllis!
Yes… I was as giddy as I look on the photo… But hey, you don’t meet Mr Rummer every day!
Well, the rain did not stop us. They were so many people touring these homes, it was quite special.
